[SAMPLE EDITORIAL ESSAY]
A handoff compresses the distance between the ball handler and the receiver. The player giving the ball can turn their body into a screen, while the receiver takes possession already moving toward the rim. Defenders have little time to exchange assignments.
The action also leaves room for counters. The first player can keep the ball, fake the handoff, or slip toward the basket if the defense overplays the receiver.
